Susana Mendes Silva’s second Pact in Almada
20.06.2022, News

When faced with an invitation to make a solo show, the artist decided to invite a “constellation” of artists.

The second moment of Pacto [Pact], titled Dialogue, gathers works by artists of different generations: Ana Hatherly, Carla Cruz, Carla Filipe, Dorita Castel-Branco, Gisela Casimiro, Leonor Parda, Luísa Cunha, Mafalda Santos, Mané Pacheco, Maria José Aguiar, Miguel Bonneville, Rogério Nuno Costa e Susana Mendes Silva. Until August 28.

After the performance Mariana made by Mendes Silva at the Museu Regional de Beja, about Mariana Alcoforado and her Cartas Portuguesas [Portuguese Letters], curator Filipa Oliveira invited the artist for another solo show, this time in Almada. But Mendes Silva decided to divide the time of the show and the classical form of a solo exhibition and make a group of different events – a party, a conference, a talk, an exhibition, a reading. The artist’s idea was to think together with other authors and the public these fundamental works: Cartas Portuguesas [Portuguese Letters] e Novas Cartas Portuguesas [New Portuguese Letters]; and controversial and feminist issues from the present and future.

Mendes Silva divided this Pacto [Pact] in three moments marked by three symbolic dates 1669-1972-2022. The first moment was called Laboratório [Lab], with talks, readings, and a party; the second one titled Diálogo [Dialogue], with an exhibition of works at Almada’s municipal gallery; the projection of the film Prazer Camaradas by José Filipe Costa, on July 19th at 9pm, at the Auditório Fernando Lopes-Graça; and a guided tour and practical session with the Colectivo Faca, on August 6th, at 5pm, at Almada Municipal Gallery. Another date to remember: on August 28th there will be a finissage that marks moment III, title Future.
